This Ramadan Feed a Fasting Refugee
05 May 2016
This Ramadan we give donors the opportunity to feed fasting refugees on the Greek Island of Lesvos, which is one of the first places that refugees arrive at when seeking refuge in Europe. Refugees make the journey to Lesvos in dangerously overcrowded dinghies or small wooden boats which often prove fatal to their human cargo. Due to backlogs, many are forced to stay for extended periods and face basic needs for this duration.

The war and crises in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and other regions have forced large numbers of desperate people to head towards Europe in a desperate attempt to seek safety for themselves and their families. The reluctance of some European Governments to fulfil the law regarding refugees has rendered many of these people homeless and in desperate need of shelter, food and medical assistance as highlighted by the international media.
Syrians, who make up the majority of the refugees arriving on the Greek island of Lesvos, are sent to the separate Moria camp, where they wait one to two days for documents that allow them to travel onwards to Athens. Kara Tepe is another camp that was set up by the local mayor on a car park facility. Originally intended for 500 people, it is very overcrowded and sometimes has more than 1,500 people staying in it at a time. At these camps, there are often not enough tents, toilets or showers and a generally very difficult living conditions prevail.
This Ramadan the Al-Imdaad Foundation will be working with partners to assist refugees intending to fast by providing daily Suhoor and iftaar meals. Through our partner NGO, Children of Adam, we have facilitated access to all the refugee camps in Lesvos and are able to offer hot, halal meals to the refugees in residence.
